The NYT reports today that Gen. David Petraeus suggested in a public presentation that the US and Iran have a common interest in a stable Afghanistan, raising the possibility that he would support US engagement with Iran. IPS journalist and blogger Jim Lobe also reported Petraeus' comments, and noted that they may point to a coming conflict between Petraeus and Dennis Ross, Barack Obama's uber-ambassador to the Middle East, whose AIPAC/WINEP connections suggest that he might find such engagement with Iran, shall we say, distasteful. Petraeus phrased his comments carefully, with proper deference to the diplomats, but the general still walks on water as far as Congress - especially the Republicans therein - are concerned.
